Wynne Construction are working in partnership with Anglesey County Council to create the first ever eco-friendly school which sets new standards with its environmentally-friendly design. The £3.7m new building contract was won following a two stage selection procedure incorporating both Quality and Health & Safety submissions.

Described as a “landmark project”, the school is being built in Llangefni on Lon Talwrn and includes a host of energy saving features which have been created by Anglesey’s property section design team.

The school design is using a sustainable timber structure, making it extremely energy efficient along with solar photovoltaic roof tiles, a wind turbine and a green roof, which will provide a natural habitat for plants and insects. The timber frame panels are manufactured off site in Mid Wales, therefore minimising site waste. All internal lighting will also be fitted with energy-efficient lamps, and the school will generate its own electricity through the photovoltaic roof tiles, with any surplus power being sold back to the national grid. It is estimated that the power generated by the pv tiles and the wind turbine will reduce the school's power requirement by approx. 45%, based on average consumption.

The current Ysgol y Graig campus is located on a busy industrial estate near the town centre and this relocation will greatly reduce the number of cars delivering and collecting the children, improving road safety and CO2 exhaust emissions. The project also includes a new footpath link from the nearby housing estate, providing the children with a safe walking or cycling route. The school forms a third of the educational schemes within the vicinity, together with Ganolfan Plant Llangefni and the Coleg Menai Construction Skills Centre.
