Flintshire Specialist Schools: Value £9.7m

The construction of two new specialist education schools in Flint has given Wynne Construction an opportunity to prove its ability as main contractor working on a large and complex partnering contract. The project, the first of its kind in Wales, has brought specialist education in line with mainstream education. Establishing these schools has been one of Flintshire's finest and most exciting achievements.
The primary school, Ysgol Pen Coch, for pupils aged 3 to 11, has been built alongside Ysgol Gwynedd on Prince of Wales Avenue, whilst the secondary school, Ysgol Maes Hyfryd for pupils aged 11 to 18, is adjacent to Flint High School on Fifth Avenue.
Working in partnership with Flintshire County Council, and following a two-stage tender process competing against both local and national construction companies, Wynne Construction was awarded the £9.7m partnering contract to build the two new schools.
The first stage competitive tender was based on quality and price and the second stage negotiated within a framework to achieve an agreed maximum price. The initial designs for the project involved three schemes and the costings were notably higher than the original budget set by the Council.
