Ysgol Bryn Elian, Colwyn Bay

The building was developed from Conwy EDS’s proposals and was designed to create a minimal visual impact on its surroundings. A fair faced coloured block was chosen to the lower levels, with the upper levels completed in insulated colour coated cladding. A dramatic aluminium arched roof completes the envelope and incorporates special aerofoil sections at the eaves to provide a soft edge against the hillside.

The complete building is partially cut into the sloping hillside and posed a number of challenges in terms of the amount of excavated material to be removed from site through a “live” school environment. Before the construction of the new sports facilities could commence a reinforced retaining wall and ground stabilisation had to be completed.

The structure consisted of in-situ concrete pads and traditional strip foundations and concrete floor slabs surmounted by a steel frame with long span beams spanning over the indoor sports facilities to provide column free spaces. An under floor heating system was integrated into the design together with extract and supply ventilation to provide the perfect indoor environment. Mechanical and electrical systems were installed, and included heating and ventilation, sprinkler system an intruder alarm and CCTV. A sustainable drainage system was installed with attenuation tanks to prevent any risk of flooding. Associated works included a car parking area and landscaping works.
