Rhodri Morgan officially opens Flintshire Specialist Schools
FLINTSHIRE’S two new specialist schools have been officially opened by the Welsh Assembly Government First Minister Rhodri Morgan.
Built by Wynne Construction, the teachers and children of primary school Ysgol Pen Coch and high school Ysgol Maes Hyfryd are already enjoying their first term in the state-of-the art buildings.
Lots of features and world-class facilities have been added to ease the special needs children into their new surroundings.
Visits were organised for the pupils throughout the building process to familiarise them with their new environment.
Ysgol Pen Coch shares its campus with Ysgol Gwynedd and Ysgol Maes Hyfryd shares an outside activity zone with Flint High School.
Rhodri Morgan said: “I hope the children will be very happy in their new ultra-modern schools.
“These new schools fit in with our strategy for developing schools fit for the 21st century.
“I’m pleased to see both schools have been built to meet BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) excellence standards that reflect our commitment to sustainable development, with a high proportion of sustainable materials used to make the schools highly energy efficient with low maintenance costs.”
Flintshire County Council’s executive member for education and youth, Cllr Nigel Steele-Mortimer, added: “Everyone who has been involved in this project should feel proud of their achievements and I hope the pupils, teachers and staff enjoy their new schools.”
