A stand-alone extension to the front of the existing council office main entrance, the purpose of the building was to provide a 'meet and greet' area, with a feeling of space and light.

As full use of the council offices was to continue during the construction phase, a great deal of planning and co-ordination with the building users was essential in order to minimize disruption and ensure the health and safety of both staff and visitors. Enabling works were carried out to provide a temporary entrance, fire escape route and visitor facilities during the works.

Constructed on piled foundations with reinforced concrete raft, the building was a Glulam curved portal with an insulated standing seam zinc roof. The external walls were a mix of rendered masonry and curtain walling.

Based on 'Passivhau' principles, the building was designed to be naturally ventilated using a stack effect ventilation approach.

The accommodation comprised a new reception, offices and toilet facilities. Additional works involved diversions of the existing main surface and foul water drains, alterations to the existing car parking and footpaths and installation of brick paviors to the large external pedestrian concourse with new external lighting.

In addition to the construction we were asked to include a review of the design to ensure that all buildability, value engineering aspects had been considered and that the design was suitably progressed prior to commencement of construction and that all interface issues between the various elements have been fully considered.
