The conversion of part of the existing leisure centre to form a Youth Centre involved the installation of a mezzanine floor to an existing squash court to form a seminar room on the first floor and a youth activity room on the ground floor. The former spectator gallery to the first floor was converted into a computer suite with alterations in the remaining areas providing an office, kitchen/refreshment's area as well as the refurbishment of the existing toilets and installation of a chair lift
The existing leisure centre was in daily use by members of the school which shares the same site and members of the community as well.
Throughout the project, the team at Wynne Construction worked in close cooperation with the sports centre management and school to ensure that there was no disruption to services and to ensure the complete safety of the existing sports centre users. Since the work area was adjacent to the main access to the sports centre and car parking area, a strict protocol in terms of managing deliveries, removal of demolition material and execution of the works was required.
Steelwork was installed to the existing squash court to form a mezzanine floor with timber joists and plywood decking, thereby creating a new ceiling below. Asbestos from the existing window infill panels was also removed prior to the installation of new curtain walling. Internal works involved removal of the existing services and installation of new lighting, power and IT infrastructure.
The existing heating system was also altered and adapted to suit the new layout. New suspended ceilings and floor finishes were added, walls re-plastered and new doors fixed prior to redecoration.
