Pupils take part in health and safety awareness session Pupils from a Welsh-medium primary school in north Powys have taken part in a health and safety awareness session with a construction company that will be building their new school.

Denbighshire-based Wynne Construction held the awareness session with Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng pupils on Tuesday, June 22 to talk about the brand-new school that is being built as well as the importance of health and safety while construction works are carried out.

The company also launched a competition which will see pupils design a safety poster. Not only will pupils be in with a chance of winning a prize but their posters will also be on display on site while the new school is being built.

Enabling work for the new 150-place primary school have started ahead on the main construction.

The innovative scheme for the new school combines the old and the new which will provide the pupils of Ysgol Gymraeg y Trallwng and the community of Welshpool with fantastic facilities whilst maintaining the presence of the iconic Ysgol Maesydre.

The old Grade II listed building will be refurbished to accommodate early years and community facilities and a new extension will be built to include a new school hall and classroom bases. The building will also be the first Passivhaus hybrid project in the UK.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Education and Property, said: “This is an exciting project and I’m delighted that pupils from Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng had the opportunity to speak to Wynne Construction about the building of their new school and also hear about the importance of health and safety while construction works take place.

“The new school will provide learners who attend Ysgol Gymraeg y Trallwng with 21st Century facilities while preserving and modernising a Grade II listed building for the community of Welshpool to use.

“We have a strategy to transform education in Powys and the Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng new build shows our commitment to deliver this important strategy. When complete, it will provide a learning environment that will allow learners and teaching staff to thrive and reach their potential through the medium of Welsh.”

Angharad Davies, Headteacher of Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng, said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed their first engagement activity with Wynne Construction. It has reignited the excitement and prospects associated with the new build.

“The questioning has been endless since the event and they are already visualising our school, using their creativity and originality. We are so grateful and so excited.”

Alison Hourihane, Social Value Manager at Wynne Construction, said: “It was a fantastic afternoon. It was really good to meet the children virtually, using Teams, and to talk them through the new school building design and the importance of health and safety on construction sites.

“They asked some great questions and we’re able to meet our assistant site manager, Dyfed Edwards who will be working on the project. We look forward to receiving their poster designs on health and safety and to hopefully showing them around the site in the coming months.”
